Abstract
This presentation covers the size of the U.S. mortgage market, the U.S. government’s role in that market, the bubble and burst in housing prices, current trends in residential mortgage delinquencies, the disproportionate share of delinquent mortgages securitized into private label securities, recommended ways to prevent foreclosures, suggestions to rebuild confidence in the residential securitization market, current challenges for mortgage servicers, a possible future role and structure for government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs), and recommended features of an improved mortgage-backed securities market.
